As California moves forward with historic investments in career connected, college preparatory learning, it is more important than ever to stay focused on what truly makes a difference for students. That means paying close attention to what works, ensuring students have meaningful, high quality learning experiences, and listening carefully to young people themselves.

Each year, the Linked Learning Alliance surveys thousands of pathway students across the state to elevate their perspectives and learn from their experiences. This document presents findings from the most recent academic year, capturing student reflections from seven districts and diverse pathways.

In a year marked by uncertainty and change, the Linked Learning Alliance advanced policy, practice, and public will to bring high-quality, student-centered learning to more adolescents at a pivotal moment in their lifetimes—and ours. Here we share strides we made together in 2025.

This study traces the transformation of Fremont High School in East Oakland from a chronically underenrolled campus to an award-winning school with a waiting list of hundreds. The brief documents how a community-led redesign built around Linked Learning pathways, community schools principles, dual enrollment, and restorative practices reshaped this school’s outcomes and culture.

Work-based learning—like job shadows, guest speaking engagements, internships, and more—play a powerful role in boosting student success in the classroom and as part of the future workforce. By design, work-based learning experiences take shape along a continuum—offering students the
opportunity to progress in their learning and skills, and employers a range of opportunities to engage at the level of commitment and interest right for them.

By design, Linked Learning engages young people during their decade of difference, between ages 14 to 24, when identities and aspirations are taking shape. Students gain the confidence and support they need to succeed in high school, and graduate fully prepared to pursue a full range of postsecondary options—especially the high-growth, high-opportunity careers of the future.

The Linked Learning Alliance champions the success of our state’s historic investment in college and career readiness—in partnership with all who share this aim. We collaborate with funders and policymakers and work directly with local pathway leaders and educators toward the GSPP goals we share for opportunity and economic mobility across California.
