Why Linked Learning Analytics?


While the quantity of Linked Learning pathways available to California students is rapidly expanding, an important challenge for the field at this moment is to ensure that this massive increase in scale is accompanied by a commitment to pathway quality. Linked Learning delivers better outcomes for students when it is implemented with fidelity to the four integrated core components. The Linked Learning Alliance Board of Directors adopted an action plan to guide the Linked Learning field over the next five years, which included a focus on the need for increased data and knowledge about why Linked Learning works, and what particular components of the approach yield the highest impact for students.

  • Linked Learning Analytics helps districts track pathway progress, demographics, and improvement in student outcomes, including college and career readiness indicators. Participating districts will have access to predictive analytics and performance dashboards and a centralized platform. All districts are welcome to sign up to participate in the Analytics system.
  • Built in alignment with Linked Learning Certification, with the goal of incorporating data and analytical dashboards in pathway certification and improvement processes.


Education Analytics, the reporting and analytics arm of the project, will work with data from all LLA partners to perform advanced strategic analytics to develop and integrate useful metrics to help pathways, schools, districts and consortia identify success in access, opportunity, and outcomes in high school Linked Learning pathways, and ultimately in college and career success. The goal of the practices informed through these metrics is to ensure that more students, particularly underrepresented students, complete high school, earn a college degree and/or professional credential, and enter financially sustaining and personally relevant careers.

Examples of the types of questions the system would help you ask might be:

  • How do the GPAs between pathway and non-pathway students compare?
  • Do pathway students meet a-g requirements at the same or different rate as non-pathway students?

Linked Learning Analytics key features will include: performance dashboards, reports, predictive analytics, and early warning signals. It will allow for the collection of work-based learning data, offer districts and consortia the ability to organize and collaborate on a regional level, and align with Linked Learning Certification. By aligning with Linked Learning Certification, districts will be able to use their data to support pathway certification and continuous improvement.

CORE Districts

Districts and consortia will have the opportunity to opt into the Link data solution alone, however by opting into both Linked Learning Analytics and the CORE Data Collaborative jointly districts will access a comprehensive K-12 data analytics system. Opting into both systems offers districts more expansive dashboards, reports and predictive analytics without a significant increase in the custom files districts must produce because most of the systems’ metrics are shared, and the common data partners streamlines the process.

The primary distinction between the two systems is that Linked Learning Analytics is focused on grades 9-12 and postsecondary experience, and emphasizes indicators of college and career readiness, as well as outcomes related to industry relevant pathways. The CORE Data Collaborative supports grades K-12 and incorporates measures of academic achievement and growth, school culture and climate, and student social-emotional factors.


  1. Linked Learning Analytics is available for districts to onboard any time.
  2. The first step for any district is to initiate the data sharing agreement and MOU process with the Linked Learning Alliance.
  3. Once the agreement is signed and in place, the district can choose to provide the final 2015-16 CALPADS ODS extracts directly to the data system, or provide permissions for Versifit Technologies to extract on behalf of the district/COE, as well as a custom Linked Learning data file.
