New CA Budget Deal Allocates $300 Million Annually for K-12 Career Technical Education

The Linked Learning Alliance applauds CA Governor Jerry Brown, Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon for allocating $300 million in on-going funding to support and expand high quality Career Technical Education (CTE) in high schools.

Governor Jerry Brown and the California Legislature have agreed on a budget that combines two approaches for funding CTE programs that serve high school students. The budget compromise will provide $150 million annually in continuous funding to build and support high-quality CTE pathways by permanently extending the California CTE Incentive Grant Program (CTEIG), and $150 million ongoing to establish a regional partnership between high school CTE programs, the community college districts, and industry through the California Community Colleges Strong Workforce Program. Both fund sources are intended to establish new and support existing high-school CTE programs.

“Schools with high quality Linked Learning pathways will be well positioned to access and use these CTE program funds to give students a rich educational experience that advances both their college and career aspirations,” said Anne Stanton, President of the Linked Learning Alliance. “Linked Learning Gold certification advances a high quality standard – integrated CTE and college preparatory academics, and deep partnerships between K-12 and postsecondary institutions that increase articulation and dual enrollment agreements and inspire employer engagement. We look forward to working with all of our partners to reach high on quality and towards the North Star of educational justice as we work to nurture the creative, skilled and talented workforce California needs.”

Following the approval by the Budget Conference Committee, the budget compromise will be referred to the Assembly and the Senate for their respective floor votes, then must be signed by Governor Brown by State Constitutional deadline of July 1.
