You're Invited to Measure What Matters: Performance Assessment During and Beyond COVID-19

November 3, 2021

As educators, decision makers, students, and families work to continue to return to classrooms and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential that we commit to policies and practices that center student voice, link young people to real, experiential learning, and ensure equity in the classroom.

We already knew, through research, that performance assessment—which includes open-ended responses, essays, lab investigations, portfolio defenses, capstone research projects, and more—is effective. Now we know, because of the pandemic, that performance assessment is also resilient. Despite the challenges of remote and hybrid learning, communities with high-quality performance assessment systems were still able to engage and challenge their students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that measure what matters: 21st century skills, disciplinary and interdisciplinary content knowledge, and competencies. We can continue these practices as we face the new challenges that come with returning to classrooms and healing from the impacts COVID-19 has had on students, educators, and families.

Join the Linked Learning Alliance, the Center for Innovation in Education, and Envision Learning Partners as we #BurstTheBubble of standardized assessments and explore the value of performance assessments during and beyond COVID-19.

On Wednesday November 17, 1:00-2:00pm PST, join students, educators, and leaders for a discussion on the value of performance assessments during and beyond COVID-19. We will hear from a student on their performance assessment experience this year. Participants will also hear conversation among leaders from the school, district, and state level on the ways they have integrated performance assessment into their programs sustainability and with fidelity. The panel will be moderated by Yvonne Armenta, Envision Learning Partners Berkeley Graduate; Manager, Internal Communications at Healthline Media, and Paul Leather, Education Policy and State and National Relationships Partner at Center for Innovation in Education. Panelists will include:

  • Beth Blankenship, Education Consultant, Fairfax County Public Schools
  • Young Whan Choi, Manager of Performance Assessment, Oakland Unified School District
  • Angela Landrum, Principal Consultant, Colorado Department of Education
  • And more!
